The first time that your child sleeps away from home - at the grandparents' house, with friends or a trusted babysitter - is a challenging event for everyone concerned. As a parent, you can feel guilty for "abandoning" your child. Your son or daughter may feel confused by the change, and become upset by the absence of mummy and daddy. These emotions are entirely natural. There are some practical steps you can take to minimise the trauma of home-sickness, for both you and your child.
- Try a couple of "practice rounds" before the real thing: go to the alternative caregiver's house together. Bring your child's favourite toys. While the caregiver plays with your child, step outside and take a walk around the block before returning. On following visits, take a bit more time away from your child: do some shopping or just take a coffee break in a café. You get used to being away from your child, and she or he can become accustomed to the new caregiver.
- Feel positive: Your child will sense your anxiety if you do not feel comfortable about leaving her/him with someone else. If you do not feel happy about it, don't do it. Discuss your feeling with your partner, friend or doctor. Ensure that the alternative caregiver is someone you trust completely.
- Be firm: Explain to your child that it's OK to be away from home, and that she/he will come back soon. Be gentle but firm: show your trust in the caregiver by being consistent and not changing your plans, especially not in response to a temper tantrum.
- Phone and say hi: If you want to call your child, do so at an agreed time and be consistent. Don't make unexpected "check up" calls: arrange a procedure with your caregiver.
